Hispanic Service Institution (HSI) Science, Technology, Engineering & Math (STEM) Grant

Funded by the U.S. Department of Education Strengthening Science, Engineering, and Energy Career Options (SECO Project)

NMSU-­‐A was awarded a 5-­‐year $4.3 million grant to update our Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) programs

What does this mean for you? We’ve purchased over 300 pieces of new equipment, are renovating our Biology, Chemistry, Geology/Geography, and Physics/Engineering labs, and are currently developing or revising the following degree options to help you on your path to high-paying, in-demand careers.


HSI-STEM Science

  • Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Geology Labs Renovated
    Supplied with state-­‐of-­‐ the-­‐art equipment
  • Associate of Science Degree Updated
    Facilitates transfer into one of the natural sciences: Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Physics
  • Instructors Incorporating Service-­Learning
    Environmental Science students working on Native Plant Demonstration Project with City of Alamogordo Library; funded by PNM
  • Students Serve as Science Mentors to High School and Elementary School Students
  • Paid and Credit Internships Available


HSI-STEM Technology

  • Biomedical Equipment Technology (OBET)
    Prepares students for high-­‐salary employment in the maintenance & repair of medical equipment such as CT scanners
  • Computing Associate of Applied Science
    Revised to offer a specialization in Web Mastery or Business Applications(UNIX, PC Maintenance, Windows, spreadsheet applications, etc.)
  • Electronics & Computer Engineering Technology (ECET)
    Complete the first two years of a Bachelor’s degree here and the remaining 2 on-­‐line!
  • Students Serve as Lego League Mentors to Elementary School Students
  • Credit Internships Available


HSI-STEM Engineering

  • Engineers on Faculty
    Chemical, Civil, Environmental, Mechanical, Petroleum Engineers on faculty
  • Associate of Science in General Engineering (AS GE)
    Complete the first two-­‐years’ requirements toward a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering here in Alamogordo
  • Paid Internships Available
