Fry Scholarship

Recent legislation amended Chapter 33 by adding a new eligibility criterion.  Children of an active duty member of Armed Forces who died in the line of duty on or after 9/11/2001 are now eligible for chapter 33. They are entitled to all chapter 33 benefits at the 100% rate, except for yellow ribbon.  Their delimiting date is their 33rd birthday.

They can apply beginning 5/1/2010. VA must begin issuing benefits payment for eligible students no later than 8/1/2010, retroactive to 8/1/2009.

The Guild of the Spencer Theater for the Performing Arts

Criteria:

  • Have attended an accredited college or university for two semesters
  • Be enrolled full-time
  • Must have a C+ or better in the previous semester
  • Must have plans to move into the performing arts arena or teaching in one of the listed performing arts areas

Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship Program

Annually awards approximately 30 scholarships worth up to $30,000 per year to students and recent alumni from accredited two-year colleges and community colleges.

Each campus can nominate two students or recent alumni.

Basic eligibility:  Nominees must have at least a 3.5 GPA; have sophomore status by December 31, 2009, or have graduated in the past five years from an accredited two-year college; and plan to enroll full-time in a bachelor’s degree program in Fall 2010.  The Foundation’s selection criteria include academic excellence and unmet financial need.

Deadline:  Campus deadlines vary.  Contact your faculty representative.  Nomination deadline is January 26, 2010.

Larry Albers Nursing Scholarship

Criteria:

  • Must be a nursing student enrolled at NMSU Alamogordo
  • Attach a minimum of two letters of recommendation

  • Must be enrolled or planning to enroll in Music 160 or 161

National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development

NISOD now accepting essay submissions for the Community College Week-NISOD Student Essay Contest. The winning essay is awarded a total of $3,000+ in prizes to be shared with the student author, the outstanding faculty/staff/administrator featured in the essay, and the student’s community college.

You can download a PDF of the contest flyer and forward the information to other faculty, staff, administrators, and students. We also invite you to post the flyer on your campus. The deadline for the essay submission is November 6, 2009.

National Association of Abandoned Mine Land Programs

NAAMLP is a non-profit, professional organization that promotes the reclamation and
restoration of lands affected by abandoned mining throughout the nation. Title IV of the
Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA) established the national
Abandoned Mine Land (AML) Reclamation Program under the Office of Surface Mining
Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE), U.S. Department of the Interior. SMCRA’s
purpose is to reclaim land and water resources adversely affected by past coal mining
and left abandoned or inadequately restored. SMCRA levies fees on active coal mining
to pay the reclamation costs. Collected fees are deposited in the AML Fund and
redistributed to authorized states and tribes to implement their own programs. NAAMLP
is the professional association of States and Tribes who work under the auspices of
Title IV of SMCRA, as amended.
The $1,500 NAAMLP Scholarship is intended to assist in the education of students who
intend to work as scientists or technicians in the field of mine land reclamation.
Letters of application for this scholarship must be received by May 30, 2010.
Scholarship monies will be awarded in the form of a tuition check made out to the
accredited educational institution of your choice to be received at the annual NAAMLP
conference. Two scholarships will be given: 1) to a student enrolled in a school in the
Midwest or Eastern United States (generally east of the Mississippi River); and 2) to a
student enrolled in a school in the Western United States. The scholarship holders are
expected to attend the 2010 NAAMLP Annual Conference in Scranton, Pennsylvania
from September 19-22, 2010. Costs (travel, lodging, per diem up to a total of $1000)
and Conference registration fees will be covered in addition to the scholarship.
Scholarship recipients are expected to participate in all Conference activities. Tuition
may be used at any accredited institution of higher education. The NAAMLP
Scholarship must be utilized during the 2010-2011 school year.

Office of Navajo Nation Scholarship

To apply, students go to the Office of Navajo Nation Scholarship (ONNSFA) website (www.onnsfa.org) and click on the “I want to Apply Online” link then “Online Forms.”  There students will see the 3 types of applications:  Full0time, Part-time, and Teacher Education Program.  The rest of the documents such as the Letter of Admissions, Financial Needs Analysis (FNA), Certificate of Navajo Indian Blood (CIS), official transcripts from all previous institutions and/or a graduation degree checklist, and course registration can be sent by mail, faxed or emailed in a PDF form to ONNSFA.

Scholarships for Community College Students

USA TODAY All-USA Academic Team, the Coca-Cola All-State Academic Team and the New Century Scholars Program annually award approximately $5000,000 in scholarships to more than 350 students.

Guistwhite Scholarships of $5,000 are awarded annually to 20 students for transfer to senior colleges.

Hites Scholarships of $7,500 are awarded annually to five students for transfer to senior colleges.

Amount: $500

Criteria:

  • Must be a women
  • Must be a returning student who has not attended college for at least one semester
  • Must be a degree seeking student
  • Must be enrolled in no fewer than six semester hours.  These can be online classes
  • Must be able to address financial needs
  • Must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher
  • Must have completed 12 hours of college credit

Rotary Club of Alamogordo Medical Careers Scholarship

Amount:  $500

Criteria:

Must be a resident of Otero County

Must be enrolled in a degree/certificate program at NMSU-A or Dona Ana Branch

Must have earned a GPA of at least 2.5

Deadline:  April 14, 2010 for 2010/2011

Rotary Club of Alamogordo Billie Holder Memorial Scholarship

Amount:  $500

Criteria:

Must be a resident of Otero County

Must have completed (or will complete) the freshman year of study

Must have earned a GPA of at least 2.5 or better

Must be enrolled as a full time student at NMSU-A or NMSU

Deadline:  April 14, 2010 for 2010/2011

Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowships

The Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation is seeking talented and highly-motivated college juniors who represent all ethnic and social backgrounds to apple for 2010 Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowships.  College junior applicants must have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.2 or higher and must be interested in becoming Foreign Service Officers in the U.S. Department of State.

Transfer Tuition Scholarship

Amount: Tuition and fees for a new entering transfer student

Criteria:

  • Students transferring from a New Mexico branch, community, or junior college with between 30 to 90 total credits attempted at all institutions and a minimum GPA of 3.5.
  • Must be a New Mexico resident.

Renewable: 3.5 cumulative NMSU GPA and 12 credit hours earned each semester.  Scholarship award is for a maxmum of four semesters.  For top consideration, a scholaship application is required.

This scholarship is not a part of the general scholarship application.

Vietnam Veterans Scholarship

Amount: Tuition, required fees, and books not to exceed an amount equal to the highest resident tuition charged by a state institution. ($1520.00 tuition, $500.00 books per year)

Critertia:

  • Must have Honorable Discharge
  • Must have established residency in New Mexico for a minimuim of ten years
  • Must have been awarded the vietnam campaign, or vietname Service Medal
  • Must plan to attend a state supported school, i.e. state universities, community colleges, etc.

Qualifications for children of deceased veterans scholarship:

  1. Veteran of the Armed Forces must have been a resident of New Mexico at the original time of entry into the United States Armed Forces.
    a. Must have been in during a period of armed conflict
    b. Must have been killed in action or as a result of such action
  2. National Guard Members-Must have been killed while on active duty
  3. State Police Officers-Must have been killed while on active duty
  4. Child must be between the ages of 16 and 26
  5. Child must be enrolled in a state supported school
