Fry Scholarship

Recent legislation amended Chapter 33 by adding a new eligibility criterion.  Children of an active duty member of Armed Forces who died in the line of duty on or after 9/11/2001 are now eligible for chapter 33. They are entitled to all chapter 33 benefits at the 100% rate, except for yellow ribbon.  Their delimiting date is their 33rd birthday.

They can apply beginning 5/1/2010. VA must begin issuing benefits payment for eligible students no later than 8/1/2010, retroactive to 8/1/2009.

The Guild of the Spencer Theater for the Performing Arts

Criteria:

Have attended an accredited college or university for two semesters
Be enrolled full-time
Must have a C+ or better in the previous semester
Must have plans to move into the performing arts arena or teaching in one of the listed performing arts areas

Deadline: Must be submitted 60 days prior to the semester for which you are applying

Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center Auxiliary Health Careers Scholarship

Amount:  Varies

Criteria:

Be a U.S. citizen and a resident of Otero County
Must have a good scholastic standing evidenced by an official transcript of grades from a Registrars Office
Must be pursing education in a medically related field

Indian Health Scholarship

Amount:  Varies

Criteria:

Must provide documentation of Native American/Alaskan Native eligibility.  For the Health Professions-section 104, only federally recognized tribal members are eligible.
Enrolled or accepted for enrollment at an accredited college or university in a healthcare program funded by the scholarship
Citizen of the United States

Jack Kent Cooke Foundation

Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship Program

Annually awards approximately 30 scholarships worth up to $30,000 per year to students and recent alumni from accredited two-year colleges and community colleges.

Each campus can nominate two students or recent alumni.

Basic eligibility:  Nominees must have at least a 3.5 GPA; have sophomore status by December 31, 2009, or have graduated in the past five years from an accredited two-year college; and plan to enroll full-time in a bachelor’s degree program in Fall 2010.  The Foundation’s selection criteria include academic excellence and unmet financial need.

Deadline:  Campus deadlines vary.  Contact your faculty representative.  Nomination deadline is January 26, 2010.

James O. Pankey Memorial Scholarship

Amount: $200 ($100 for two semesters)

Criteria:

Must be an ET (electronics technology) major
Must be enrolled at least half-time (6 credit hours)
Must have a cumulative high school or college GPA of 3.0 or better
Must write a statement of career objectives and the role higher education will play in reaching that goal

Deadline:  March 15, 2010 for 2010/2011

Larry Albers Nursing Scholarship

Criteria:

Must be a nursing student enrolled at NMSU-Alamogordo
Attach a minimum of two letters of recommendation

Lewis Jordan Music Scholarship

Amount: Tuition for class

Criteria:

Must be enrolled or planning to enroll in Music 160 or 161
Must maintain a 3.0 GPA while in the class

Llave Scholarship

Amount:  $1,000 (10 available)

Criteria:

Applicant must be a New Mexico resident
Full-time student enrolled in or accepted to study at an accredited college, university, community college or vocational school
Student must have a GPA of 2.0 or greater

Nathan H. Kolb Memorial Scholarship

Amount:  Varies

Criteria:

Preference given to a student seeking a degree in the Electronics Technology degree program, or Electrical Engineering degree program or in preparation for FAA certification as an aircraft mechanic

Deadline:  March 15, 2010 for Fall 2010

National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development

NISOD now accepting essay submissions for the Community College Week-NISOD Student Essay Contest. The winning essay is awarded a total of $3,000+ in prizes to be shared with the student author, the outstanding faculty/staff/administrator featured in the essay, and the student’s community college.

You can download a PDF of the contest flyer and forward the information to other faculty, staff, administrators, and students. We also invite you to post the flyer on your campus. The deadline for the essay submission is November 6, 2009.

New Mexico Legislative Endowment Program Scholarship

Amount:  Varies

Criteria:

Must be degree seeking at NMSU-Alamogordo
Must be enrolled at least half-time (6 credit hours)
Must be a New Mexico resident
Must show financial need by submitting a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
Must not be eligible to receive any New Mexico state scholarship or state grant
Preference will be given to a continuing or returning student

Deadline:  March 15, 2010 for 2010/2011

New Mexico Scholars Program Scholarship

Amount:  Tuition and fees plus a book stipend

Criteria:

Must be a New Mexico high school graduate who has not yet turned 22
Must be a full-time student
Must have a combined family income of no more than $30,000 for one student in college or no more than $40,000 a year for more than one student in college
Must have received a composite ACT score of 25 or higher or SAT 1160 or top 5% of their high school graduating class
Must be a citizen of the United States or have a permanent visa
Must be a New Mexico resident
This scholarship is for an incoming high school student or a first time freshman under the age of 21 who has never attended any other college and meets the criteria above

Deadline:  March 15, 2010 for 2010/2011

Office of Navajo Nation Scholarship

To apply, students go to the Office of Navajo Nation Scholarship (ONNSFA) website (www.onnsfa.org) and click on the “I want to Apply Online” link then “Online Forms.”  There students will see the 3 types of applications:  Full0time, Part-time, and Teacher Education Program.  The rest of the documents such as the Letter of Admissions, Financial Needs Analysis (FNA), Certificate of Navajo Indian Blood (CIS), official transcripts from all previous institutions and/or a graduation degree checklist, and course registration can be sent by mail, faxed or emailed in a PDF form to ONNSFA.

Otero County Farm and Livestock Bureau Scholarship

Amount:  $800 (one available)

Criteria:

Must have at least a 2.5 scholastic grade point average from the high school or university last attended
Must maintain the status of a full time student with a cumulative 2.5 GPA to acquire or retain the scholarship
Must submit a short not to exceed one page typed essay outlining choice of major field of study
Must provide an official original transcript from the high school or university last attended
Second semester renewal will also require an official transcript
Must provide two formally signed original letters of recommendation from individuals of your choice

Deadline:  Application must be received by the Otero County Farm and Livestock Bureau by April 16, 2010

Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship

Scholarships for Community College Students

USA TODAY All-USA Academic Team, the Coca-Cola All-State Academic Team and the New Century Scholars Program annually award approximately $5000,000 in scholarships to more than 350 students.

Guistwhite Scholarships of $5,000 are awarded annually to 20 students for transfer to senior colleges.

Hites Scholarships of $7,500 are awarded annually to five students for transfer to senior colleges.

Must be a returning student pursuing a career course of study at NMSU-Alamogordo or NMSU

Must be enrolled full-time

Rotary Club of Alamogordo, NM Medical Careers Scholarship

Amount:  $500

Criteria:

Must be pursuing a degree or certificate in a medical career field at NMSU-A or NMSU Dona Ana Branch if program is not offered at NMSU-A
Must be a resident of Otero County
Must be enrolled in a degree/certificate program at NMSU-A or Dona Ana Branch
Must have earned a GPA of at least 2.5

Sandy Riordan Honor Scholarship

Amount:  Up to $100 for books

Criteria:

Must be a continuing or transfer student at NMSU-Alamogordo
First semester students attach a statement from instructors verifying grades
Transfer students attach an unofficial copy of previous college grades
Must be enrolled at least half-time
Must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA
Phi Theta Kappa membership desirable but not mandatory

Rotary Club of Alamogordo Medical Careers Scholarship

Amount:  $500

Criteria:

Must be a resident of Otero County
Must be enrolled in a degree/certificate program at NMSU-Alamogordo or Dona Ana Branch

Rotary Club of Alamogordo Billie Holder Memorial Scholarship

Amount:  $500

Criteria:

Must be a resident of Otero County

Must be enrolled as a full time student at NMSU-Alamogordo or NMSU

Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowships

The Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation is seeking talented and highly-motivated college juniors who represent all ethnic and social backgrounds to apple for 2010 Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowships.  College junior applicants must have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.2 or higher and must be interested in becoming Foreign Service Officers in the U.S. Department of State.

Transfer Tuition Scholarship

Amount: Tuition and fees for a new entering transfer student

Criteria:

Students transferring from a New Mexico branch, community, or junior college with between 30 to 90 total credits attempted at all institutions and a minimum GPA of 3.5
Must be a New Mexico resident

Renewable: 3.5 cumulative NMSU GPA and 12 credit hours earned each semester.  Scholarship award is for a maximum of four semesters.  For top consideration, a scholarship application is required.

This scholarship is not a part of the general scholarship application.

Vietnam Veterans Scholarship

Amount: Tuition, required fees, and books not to exceed an amount equal to the highest resident tuition charged by a state institution

Criteria:

Must have Honorable Discharge
Must have established residency in New Mexico for a minimum of ten years
Must have been awarded the Vietnam campaign, or Vietnam Service Medal
Must plan to attend a state supported school, i.e. state universities, community colleges, etc.

Qualifications for children of deceased veterans scholarship:

  1. Veteran of the Armed Forces must have been a resident of New Mexico at the original time of entry into the United States Armed Forces.
    a. Must have been in during a period of armed conflict
    b. Must have been killed in action or as a result of such action
  2. National Guard Members-Must have been killed while on active duty
  3. State Police Officers-Must have been killed while on active duty
  4. Child must be between the ages of 16 and 26
  5. Child must be enrolled in a state supported school
