Get to Know Your Tutor
Ruben Aleanakian is working on the German Abitur Program and will receive his Associates of Arts in May of 2010. His favorite classes, so far, are Calculus, Organic Chemistry, and interestingly enough most of the general classess as well. He tutors math up to calculus II and chemistry 111, 112, and 211, but is happy to give everything else a try.
Kathy Davies graduated from Occidental College, Los Angeles with a degree in Mathematics. She loves musical theater, and walking to the accompaniment of NPR.
Windy Franks was born to a military family in Germany. She graduated from Copperas Cove High School in 1999. She began classes at New Mexico State University during the Summer 2 session of 1999 majoring in Elementary Education. In 2001, she received 2 Associates degrees from NMSU-A, and transferred to Howard Payne University in Brownwood, TX. At Howard Payne, Windy was a Sumner’s Scholar and double majored in Elementary Education and the Academy of Freedom Honors Program. She received a Bachelor of Science in Education in 2004 and went on to get her teaching certification for both Texas and New Mexico. She taught four years in Texas before moving back to Alamogordo to be near family.
Sara Gras moved here from Colorado Springs in 2008. She has tutored math here since spring 2009. She also does the SI program for math 121. She is also a student her majoring in nursing.
Kristine Johnson graduated with a Bachelors of Science in May 12, 2007 with a major in Biology and minor in psychology. Currently she is teaching developmental math labs and classes. She tutors most of the math classes, statistics, chemistry and biology.
Tara Jernigan is originally from Arizona and transplanted here about seven years ago. She has been going to school here for six years, has an A.A. and soon will have her A.S., after which she will be going to main campus in Las Cruces where she will work on a B.S. in geology. This is her first semester as a math/geology tutor at the ASC.
David Karns is a math and computer science tutor here at the ASC and is currently working towards his associates in science. He loves to spend time with friends and is always willing to do just about anything.
Susan Lewis studied the classics at the University of Connecticut. She has written about submarines and their mechanics. Her writing experience includes everything from poetry to technical writing. She has trained groups in Dubai, France, London, and the Netherlands. She can be described as using multiple learning techniques, and as an organizer, clarifier, and translator (from vague to clear), which she shares with the students who frequent the ASC.
Jesse G. Moore was born in Carrizozo, NM; graduated from Tularosa High School; Received BA from the University of New Mexico; English & Public Speaking, 1970); MA from Stetson University., Deland, Florida, (Administration/ Supervision 1980) ; 55 hrs at NMSU-A, 2003 to present as a hobby. 34 years as secondary teacher in NM and Florida. Interesting true facts: Among students I taught were my four children, their mother, two son-in-laws, one sister-in-law, one niece, one nephew; first years teaching was where I was born (Carrizozo, NM).
Stacie Pritchet tutors English and writing. She graduated from NMSU in 2009 with a degree in nonfiction writing and research, and minors in history, English, and professional communication. She enjoys swimming and making beaded jewelry.
J.J. Rance, originally from Houston, Texas, JJ has been in Alamogordo for 2 years. Both a Phi Theta Kappa and Crimson Scholar, JJ is looking to pursue a career in either business or teaching in the field of Sociology. Whichever path he chooses, he hopes that it leads him to happiness. JJ is assigned to the ASC as part of the America Reads/Counts non-profit tutoring program, and says “I have never enjoyed a job so much as tutoring here at the ASC.”
Eric Reagan I have been tutoring in the ASC off and on since June 2005 and have taught the math labs. I tutor math, chemistry and physics. I have also been a Tutor, Teachers Aid and Supplemental Instructor at main campus. I am currently an elementary education major with a back ground focusing on math and science. I hope to one day teach Junior High math and science classes in the short term and eventually get my Masters Degree, possibly a Doctorate, to teach college math and possibly chemistry and physics.
Cindy Simpson is a 52 year old mom and grandmother and will graduate from NMSU-A in May 2010 with an Associates of Applied Science in Paralegal Studies. Her second love in reading and writing. She enjoys helping other students because she learns just as much from them as they do from her.
Jack Spears worked as an engineer at Holloman Air Force Base from 1968-1998. After retirement, he found a part time job at NMSU-A. He has been a tutor in the Math Lab since 2002.
Margaret Suzukida is tutoring for Chemistry 110. She taught the CHEM 110 lab here at NMSU-A for many years and also previously taught Chemistry at Alamogordo H.S. She graduated from the University of Illinois, and also from NMSU-Las Cruces.
Amanda Towry is currently attending NMSU Las Cruces campus in pursuit of Bachelors in Physics. She hopes to eventually gain her PhD in Physics and teach high school Physics and Math. She likes to spend her spare time reading and playing video games. Self proclaimed expert at Guitar Hero. During the summers she attends internships at different colleges for Physics research. This past summer she researched the positron spectroscopy of rubbers and polymers. This is her first semester tutoring at NMSU-A, and is enjoying it very much.
Sherri Turner graduated from Alamogordo High School in May 2008. Spring 2010 is Sherri’s fourth semester at NMSU-A, and she is working to finish her Associate of Arts degree this spring. She plans to transfer to main campus next semester to work on her bachelor’s degree in English.
Jeny Vogl tutors lower-level biology and chemistry. She is planning on majoring in biology and chemistry and will receive her associate of Science degree in the fall

Marilyn Webb’s love of reading led naturally to a Bachelor’s Degree in English Literature with a strong emphasis in history. In Particular, her interests are in British literature and medieval history. Since joining the Mary Virginia Brown Center in 2004, she has helped students in a variety of classes from both NMSU-A and main campus. “Variety of daily work is what makes tutoring so very interesting!”
