Information Technology Program

Do you have the “computer bug” and often wonder how the personal computer (PC) really functions inside that metal box that houses it? Do you spend countless hours figuring out ways to make your PC faster or more functional? Are you interested in how all the computers in a college lab, at a local business, or on the Internet communicate with each other and how they are interconnected and managed? If so, perhaps a profession as an Information Technologist (IT) is the career path for you.

New Mexico State Univeristy at Alamogordo’s Engineering Technology Program offers the Associate of Applied Science in Information Technology (IT) degree. This degree is designed for the student who has little or no knowledge of the IT field. Our primary objective is to prepare the graduate for entry-level positions in the rapidly expanding and very demanding IT field. Our secondary objective is to provide the student with the foundational coursework for the continuation of the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) bachelor program at NMSU in Las Cruces.

The IT degree provides training and skills required for employment in the IT career field. This degree focuses on networking fundamentals such as network communication devices (hubs, switches, and routers) and communication protocols such as TCP/IP. The coursework also covers many of the network operating systems (NOS) used today in homes, businesses, and government facilities. Other leading-edge IT areas taught are focused on PC and computer network security issues, PC hardware and software maintenance and support, and wireless communication standards. Upon completion of the degree, the graduate will be able to install, maintain, administer, and manage computer hardware, computer software, and information networks, including local area and wide area networks (LANs and WANs).

The NMSU-Alamogordo Engineering Technology Program’s Information Technology degree provides graduates with a strong understanding of the Information Systems and Technology (IS&T) environment allowing graduates to hit the ground running. The broad exposure allows one to get a great start in the field of IS&T which is one of the fastest growing and demanding technology-related fields.
– Roy McCullum, New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired, IS&T Manager
Having gone through the IT degree at NMSU-Alamogordo, I would highly recommend it to any potential student interested in an information technology career. The degree provides students with hands-on, real-world experiences which are exactly what employers are looking for in an IT specialist. As a graduate, the degree truly enabled me to be a more skilled and well-rounded IT employee. I am grateful that I had the opportunity to obtain my IT degree as it has benefitted my professional career objectives and provided security for my family.

The online courses were especially appealing for someone already working full-time. Prior to pursuing the IT degree, I had been working in the IT field and I wanted to expand my knowledge and get the credentials to become more marketable. I thoroughly enjoyed the courses and the instructors were excellent. I am continuing my education at Las Cruces in the ICT bachelor program and the IT degree from NMSU-A really prepared me for this next step in my professional development.
– Rob Cuatt, IT Graduate 2009
