Communication Studies

Why study communications? The answer is, “You can choose from a variety of interesting careers, and you will probably be successful in the career because the ability to communicate effectively is often cited as the skill rated number one for career advancement across all professions.”

A sampling of the careers that communication studies majors choose include management, sales, public relations, advertising, marketing, broadcasting, teaching, law, human resources, training, lobbying, labor negotiations, mediation, event planning, fund raising, campaign management, as well as many others. So if you are interested in any of the above listed fields, a communication studies major just might be right for you!

At NMSU-A, a communications course (either 265G or 253G) is required for every Associates of Arts degree, and in some cases both are required. You may also take all three communication courses (265G, 253G, and 285) as part of a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Studies at NMSU – Las Cruces.

Although NMSU-A has no associate degree nor certificate program available specifically for communication studies, classes taken in communication studies can apply toward an Associate of Arts Degree (link in PDF Format) or an Associate Degree in General Studies (link in PDF Format). Many communications courses (those that have course numbers ending in “G”) are easily transferrable to other New Mexico Universities and the credit earned in these “G” classes can count toward most NMSU-A Associate Degree Programs.
