Tears in the Darkness: Bataan Death March in Historical Context

In March join historians Dr. David Townsend and Clif McDonald as they lead readers of “Tears in the Darkness” by Michael and Elizabeth Norman, in a discussion of the 1942 battle for the Bataan Peninsula in the Philippines. Participants will read this grimly absorbing book and come to the sessions prepared to discuss. Discussion will include the history of WWII, the events of Bataan, and the aftermath of this tragedy. The Bataan Death March, reenacted at White Sands Missile Range, also occurs in the month of March.

In the first of three sessions, Dr. Townsend will present “Prelude to the Bataan Death March,” to help put this event into historical context. “The Bataan Death March stands out as one of the prime examples in modern history of the horrors of war and of man’s inhumanity to man. It has become a classic example of the need for a definition of “war crime,” and for the responsibility of leaders of military units and nations in times of war,” noted Townsend.

According to organizer Martha Burns, there are many New Mexico soldiers mentioned in the book. “Many local residents have family members or know of New Mexico soldiers who were surrendered to their Japanese captors in 1942. We began this program in an effort to honor the history of their service and sacrifice in Bataan.”

This class is in anticipation of an event sponsored by the Alamogordo Speaker Series on March 19. They will host a Speaker Presentation at the Flickinger Center featuring historians, authors and Bataan Death March survivors, with Tears in the Darkness at the heart of the event. This class and the Speaker Presentation are designed in memory of those 76,000 soldiers under American command who were surrendered to their Japanese captors in April, 1942.

Debt Elimination Techniques that Work
SP10-77 On-Line Instructor: Craig Power
Adult $79.00 On-Line

If you are like most people, you are drowning in a sea of debt and looking for someone to throw you a lifeline. Well, this course is that lifeline. You will not be pointed to debt consolidation in this course. It just does not make sense to use more debt to solve a debt problem. This course will teach you a specific and workable strategy that will get you out of all debt–including your mortgage–in the shortest possible time. The strategy presented is not new, nor is it rocket science. It is a simple, easy-to-understand method that just flat out works. However, getting out of debt is only part of the answer. You will also be pointed down a new path concerning spending, saving and handling money that will keep you out of debt forever. It does little good to be rescued only to be thrown back into the same situation again. If you want to stop the financial hemorrhaging, keep more of your hard-earned money, reduce stress, get more enjoyment out of life, and possibly even save your marriage, this is the course for you. Note: no insurance, investments, or get-rich-quick schemes will be offered.

From understanding portion sizes, and preparation methods, to meal composition and meal timing, you’ll learn food basics-and beyond! When it comes to weight loss, you may already appreciate that exercise is part of successful weight loss and weight maintenance. This course will help you discover how to take exercise to the next level and uncover thought patterns that negatively affect exercise and activity. Ready, Set, Read!
SP10-31 On-Line Instructor: Kt Paxton
Adult $79.00 On-Line

Take this opportunity to find out how children really learn to read and write. Explore current research that cuts through the media messages about reading wars and the right way to teach children. Learn by reading stories about children, doing interactive assignments, and exploring the latest in parent and childcare information. You will see everyday children’s play with a new eye as you understand how play can connect to literacy. You’ll learn how a child becomes literate from the moment of birth. First, you’ll investigate the many things a child’s growing mind must do to make sense of the written word and create writing. From there, you’ll explore the development of reading and writing from infancy to the early school years. You’ll know what problems to look for and how to assist a struggling reader. You will see how you can boost literacy growth during daily routines and child’s play. Gain confidence in your ability to guide a child’s literacy development, and take pleasure in seeing how even the littlest events can lead to really big steps in reading and writing success.
