ADA Software

The computer center has several software packages and pieces of equipment available to enhance the use of computers for students with disabilities.  Most of the software is accessible on the network allowing students with disabilities to use any computer that is attached to the network.  The bulk of the software and equipment focuses around students with visual disabilities, however much of this software and equipment will be of assistance to students with other disabilities.

Mega Dots

A DOS program that translates text into braille.  To use, type mega at a Command prompt and press Enter.  A blank screen (Editor screen) will appear.  Press the [F10] key to bring up a menu of options.

Window Eyes

A speech synthesizer program for Windows that reads what is currently on the screen.  Headphones and speech synthesizers are available for checkout through the computer center lab assistants.

Large Screen Monitors

The large screen monitors available in the classroom/labs are designated for use by students with visual disabilities.  Although anyone may use these computers, they must be relinquished to a student with visual disabilities upon request.

The computer center also maintains one computer with a large screen monitor located in the north hallway of the Science Center.  This computer was placed in this location as a safe location away from other furniture and items that may cause harm to students susceptible to seizures. However, it is available to any student with special needs.
