Setting Up Your Linux Account
You must first obtain a Linux account.
You will first need to use a Secure Shell (ssh) program to log into your Linux account and change the assigned password. When the ssh screen comes up click the Quick Connect button, then type alamo.nmsu.edu in the space provided for Host Name. Enter your user name, which is your first initial followed by the first seven letters of your last name in the space for User Name. At the password prompt, enter the password which was assigned and emailed to you.
Once logged into alamo.nmsu.edu you will see the prompt username@alamo:~> at which point you should change the password assigned to you to a password that you will make up. Your new password must be between 6 and 8 characters long, begin with a lowercase letter and contain at least one capital letter, number, or other non-lowercase or non-alphabetic character such as #, &, _, etc.
At the username@alamo:~> prompt, type passwd followed by the Enter key. This is the change password command. Upon entering the command, you’ll see a prompt to enter your old (the one assigned to you) password. As you type, you will see nothing echoed to the screen; the system is seeing what you type, although you can’t. After entering your old password and pressing Enter, you’ll then see a prompt to enter a new password. Once again, it is not echoed to the screen. You’ll enter your new password twice for verification, then you are done.
To log off, type exit followed by Enter.
A public_ html directory has been created for you. The public_ html directory is where your web pages must be stored to be accessible via the address http://alamo.nmsu.edu/~username/ where username is the name that you use to log into the system.

Computer Accounts
Types of Computer Accounts
Computer Services maintains two systems which students, faculty, and staff may use. A network account is required to use most computers on campus. This account allows the use of networked software and dial up access.
The second system is used for web pages, Unix/Linux programming, learning Unix/Linux, etc. An account on the Linux system is only necessary if you plan to publish web pages or have some other need to access a Linux operating system.
Network Accounts
Registered NMSU-A students may get their network account for the semester beginning the first day of each semester. Bring proof of current semester’s registration or current semester’s ID and completely fill out a login form which is available at the lab assistant desk in the main Computer Lab in SC104.
Student network accounts are deleted at the end of the spring and summer semester.
Registered NMSU (othern campuses) students may get a network account at NMSU-A after paying a $20.00 computer usage fee at the Business Office. Bring the receipt to the Computer Center and fill out a login form which is available at the lab assistant desk in SC104.
Linux System Accounts
Registered students, faculty, and staff may also publish their own web pages by electronically submitting an application for a Linux account.
ADA Software
The computer center has several software packages and pieces of equipment available to enhance the use of computers for students with disabilities. Most of the software is accessible on the network allowing students with disabilities to use any computer that is attached to the network. The bulk of the software and equipment focuses around students with visual disabilities, however much of this software and equipment will be of assistance to students with other disabilities.
Mega Dots
A DOS program that translates text into braille. To use, type mega at a Command prompt and press Enter. A blank screen (Editor screen) will appear. Press the [F10] key to bring up a menu of options.
Window Eyes
A speech synthesizer program for Windows that reads what is currently on the screen. Headphones and speech synthesizers are available for checkout through the computer center lab assistants.
Large Screen Monitors
The large screen monitors available in the classroom/labs are designated for use by students with visual disabilities. Although anyone may use these computers, they must be relinquished to a student with visual disabilities upon request.
The computer center also maintains one computer with a large screen monitor located in the north hallway of the Science Center. This computer was placed in this location as a safe location away from other furniture and items that may cause harm to students susceptible to seizures. However, it is available to any student with special needs.
