Biomedical Program

Are you interested in making a difference in the lives of many around you? Have you thought about a profession in the health field but are also fascinated with technology and how things operate? If so, perhaps a career as a Biomedical Electronic Technician (BMET) is the right choice for you. This career allows you to enter a field where your daily activities maintain state of the art health care technology. You will work in an area where putting your mind and hands to work will make a visible impact in the high tech world of medicine.

At the age of 50, the decision to return to school full time was a tough choice and involved making some hard decisions. It has all paid off as I will be graduating with a degree in Biomedical Engineering Technology from NMSU-A’s Engineering Technology Program. The Program is run by a great staff that works hard to ensure the success of its students and maintains good working relationships with area companies that need top notch students. During my internship for the Biomed degree, I found this career field to be fascinating and rewarding. You never know what is going to come your way and the work you do is integral to the success of the hospital staff and ultimately the patients they serve. With the hands-on experience and critical knowledge the bio-med program is giving me, I will be well prepared for a new and valuable career as a Biomedical Engineering Technologist.

A biomedical technician (BMET) is a skilled technician who ensures the safe and proper functioning of medical equipment. The BMET installs, calibrates, adjusts, repairs and performs preventive maintenance on sophisticated medical equipment such as patient monitors, electrocardiographs, blood-gas analyzers, x-ray units, defibrillators, electrosurgical units, anesthesia apparatus, MRI and CT units, and other increasingly complex systems. Most BMETs are employed in hospitals and laboratories while some work as manufacturer’s representatives.

I chose NMSU-A and the Engineering Technology Program because it is close to home and the tuition is very affordable. The small teacher to student class ratios in the ET Program provide for a great learning environment where the teachers are very accessible and willing to go that extra bit to make sure the students are comprehending the material. I also really like the way that the biomedical and electronic technology courses have the hands-on labs which correspond to the just-covered lecture material. For me, that makes the learning process a lot more fun and enjoyable.

The Engineering Technology Program at New Mexico State University-Alamogordo offers an Associate of Applied Science degree in Biomedical Electronics Technology. This degree provides academic curriculum and the hands-on skills and training for students to pursue a career as a BMET. Our primary objective is to prepare the graduate for entry-level positions in the industry while our secondary goal is to provide the student with the basic course work for initial preparation for taking the Nationally Recognized Certification for Biomedical Equipment Technicians exam.
