Strengthening Science, Engineering, and Energy Career Options (SECO Project)
NMSU-A was recently awarded a 5-year $4.3 million grant to revise and improve STEM curricula, renovate facilities, and replace old equipment. What does this mean for you? We’ve purchased over 300 pieces of new equipment, are renovating our Biology, Chemistry, Geology/Geography, and Physics/Engineering labs, and are currently developing or revising the following degree options to help you on your path to high-paying, in-demand careers:
- This degree option is for you if you are preparing for a Bachelor’s Degree in one of the natural sciences: biology, chemistry, geology, physics… Save money and complete your first two years here at home!
• General Engineering Associate of Science
- This degree is new starting Fall 2012. This option is for you if you want to complete your first two years’ studies here at home and transfer into the civil, mechanical, energy, or other engineering areas!
• Biomedical Equipment Technology Associate of Applied Science
- A federally-recognized SMART technology, this option prepares you for the high-paying field of maintenance of sophisticated medical equipment (CT Scanners, etc.)!
• Computing (Web Mastery) Associate of Applied Science
- This degree is currently in the revision stage. Another federally-recognized SMART technology, this option will prepare you for an in-demand career in Computer Graphics!
• Renewable Energy Associate of Applied Science
- This degree is currently in the development stage. Consider a career in the ever-expanding field of Renewable Energy! We are planning the following construction projects:
- A renewable energy lab for students to practice installation methods
- A 20-foot (miniature) wind tower to be used as a wind energy lab
In addition, we’re developing model articulation (transfer) options to assure rigor and transferability of your credits to a 4-year New Mexico university such as our parent NMSU campus in Las Cruces.
We’re also working to help you start a STEM Student Organization with your peers; we’re providing tutoring services to meet your needs; and we’re developing service-learning and internship opportunities.
