Computer Replacement Guidelines
New Mexico State University at Alamogordo (NMSU-A) recognizes that technology is critical in today’s society. NMSU-A’s purpose in this guideline is to insure that faculty, staff, and students are provided with the most cost effective and current technology in order to fulfill the universities mission.
Minimum Computer Specification:
Age:
Desktop and laptops should be no more that 5 years of age.
Desktop minimum specifications (PC):
- Processor capable of running Windows 7 Professional. Minimum 2nd generation i3 processor.
- Memory (RAM) should be a minimum of 4 GB.
- Hard drive should be a minimum of 250 GB with Windows 7, Office 2010 and antivirus.
- CD-ROM RW and/or DVD RW drive.
- Video card should be capable of running in 800×600 or higher mode.
- LAN card should be a minimum of 100 MB.
- Monitor size should be at least 17 inches and capable of 800×600 or higher resolution. Flat panels are recommended in order to reduce electrical and heat load.
Laptop minimum specification (PC):
- Processor capable of running Windows 7 Professional. Minimum of 2nd generation i3 processor.
- Memory (RAM) should be a minimum of 4 GB.
- Hard drive should be a minimum of 250 GB with Windows 7, Office 2010 and antiviurs.
- Display should be a minimum of 14 inches.
- CD-ROM RW or DVD RW drive.
- LAN card should be a minimum of 100 MB.
- Wireless LAN should be 802.11 b/g/n capable.
Departments are advised to implement a 4-year replacement cycle for all desktop and laptop computers to insure employees and students are working with reasonably current technology. These replacements should be done with departmental budget limitations taken into consideration.
