Library Computers Policy

General Rules

  • There is no time limit for computer use, but when there is a waiting list, and a student has been using a computer for over an hour, the computer may be re-assigned.
  • Please observe closing time. An announcement is made about 30 minutes prior to the lab’s closing. All printers will be turned off about 15 minutes before closing.
  • The college maintains the computers for students to master course-related skills and to complete course assignments.
  • Individuals creating a disturbance or making excessive noise may be asked to leave.
  • No pornography allowed.

Computing Equipment Policies

  • Installing software is prohibited. Only college owned software may be run. Users may not load or copy software on any computer.
  • Anything you may have added to the hard drive will be erased when the computer is turned off. Users can save their documents on their own storage devices.

Community Borrower Policy

Residents of Otero County may request a Townsend Library Community Borrower’s card at the Circulation Desk during open hours.

  • Community patrons must complete and sign the “Community Borrower’s Contract.”
  • Community patrons must present a picture identification card and provide documentation to confirm Otero County residency such as a check with local address imprinted, driver’s license or bill.

Community patrons must be at least 12 years of age to obtain a library card. The parent or guardian of a patron between 12 and 17 years of age must accompany the child to complete and sign the “Community Borrower’s Contract” on their first visit and to get the library card. This contract determines whether or not the child will be permitted to use the Internet connected computers in the library.

Community patrons may borrow 5 items at a time. Patrons must have their library card with them to borrow materials. Books circulate for 21 days. Videos circulate for 7 days. Books may be renewed once and videos can’t be renewed.

Community borrowers are responsible for items checked out on their card. Although Townsend Library does not charge fines, patrons may not borrow additional materials until overdue items are returned or bills for lost/missing items have been paid. Replacement costs for lost/missing/claims returned materials are the cost of the item plus a $15.00 processing fee.

If library materials are 60 days overdue or staff has evidence to indicate the patron has moved away from the local area, the amount due will be referred to the NMSU Collections Unit for action.

Both printouts from library computers and self-service photocopies cost 10 cents per page. Pick up printouts from the Front Desk.

Vietnam War — Past and Present: A Resource for High School History Teachers The web site designer writes: “as a former teacher, I understand the many challenges that instructors face in trying to cover recent US history at the end of the academic year. This web page, therefore, is meant to give teachers a fast and easy way to learn about the war, as well as ideas for how the internet can be used to teach it. It is my belief that the expanding nature of the world wide web, coupled with the fact that many Vietnam veterans are actively involved in developing their own war related sites, makes the internet a vital resource for understanding Vietnam — both as it happened at the time, and as it lives on today. So, whether you are a new teacher looking for lesson plan ideas, or a wise old sage trying to enhance an already existing syllabus, this web page has been built with you in mind.”
