Engineering Class Gets Started

March 10, 2009

This semester students at NMSU-A are having an opportunity to do a whole new kind of hands on learning! In Introduction to Engineering students are using creativity and engineering fundamentals to build their designs for everything from a car propelled by a rat trap to a tug boat. The semester will culminate with each student’s construction of a 10 foot tall trebuchet able to launch ammunition as large as a watermelon.

The class, taught by Jim Edwards, is part of a new program being offered by NMSU-A entitled General Engineering. The Associate Degree aims to prepare students with the general education and prerequisites required for the engineering program of their choice at the Las Cruces campus.

Engineering is one of the most in demand job fields currently, and NMSU-A is aiming to equip students to be competitive in the job market with preparatory programs such as this.

The class is open as an elective to all areas of study, or to students who plan to pursue studies in engineering. There are no prerequisites required. Even High School Dual Credit Students are eligible to take the class!

“We get to build things hands on, and test what we build” says Michael Kove.

Look for next semester’s offering of Introduction to Engineering in the new course schedule, which will be out soon.
