NMSU-A Theatre Auditions
August 31, 2009
NMSU-A Theatre on the Hill will hold auditions for “The Diary of Anne Frank” on Saturday, September 12 at 1 pm and on Sunday, September 13, at 2 pm at the Rohovec Fine Arts Center on the college campus. Production dates are November 13, 14, 20, 21 & 22.
The play is adapted from the book of the same name and chronicles the years the Frank family, along with a few of their Jewish friends, spent in hiding in a secret attic over Mr. Frank’s business in Amsterdam during the German occupation. The diary, written by Anne, the youngest Frank daughter, tells of how the family managed to keep their faith in humanity during some of the darkest days of World War II. “The Diary of Anne Frank” is an inspiring drama, and one of the classic scripts for the theatre.
Roles are available for six adults: Mr. Frank, Mrs. Frank, Mr. Van Daan, Mrs. Van Daan, Mr. Kraler, and Miep. Young adults are needed for the roles of Peter Van Daan, who is sixteen when the play opens, and Margot Frank, who is eighteen. The play also requires a dynamic young actress to fill the role of the thirteen-year-old Anne.
NMSU-A Theatre holds open auditions, and actors do not need to be enrolled in college in order to participate in productions.
Scripts are available for 24 hour check-out by calling Connie Breding, the play’s director, at 442-1340. Anyone wishing to work on the backstage crews or assist with building the set is encouraged to attend an audition. For additional information, call 439-3670.
NMSU-A named in Top 15%
August 28, 2009
August 17, 2009, G.I. Jobs magazine released its 2010 list honoring the top 15% of colleges, universities, and trade schools which are doing the most to embrace America’s veterans as students. The list was compiled through exhaustive research beginning last May when G.I. Jobs polled more than 7,000 schools nationwide. Methodology, criteria, and weighting for the list were developed with the assistance of an Academic Advisory Committee consisting of educators and administrators from Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Toledo, Duquesne University, Coastline Community College, and Lincoln Technical Institute.
NMSU-A made the top 15% list by hosting such activities as the BRAVE (Bringing Resource Awareness to Veterans in Education) symposium, Wounded Warrior Day, and attending several veteran job fairs and conferences and ACE transcript evaluation training.
A full story and detailed list of Military-Friendly schools will be highlighted in the annual Guide to Military Friendly Sch
ools and on a poster, both of which will be distributed to hundreds of thousands of active and former military personnel in September. A new Web site, www.militaryfriendlyschools.com, will launch in September with interactive tools and search functionality to assist military veterans in choosing schools that best meet their educational needs. The list of the top 15% of Military-Friendly schools can be found at this same site.
Stefanie Ledesma and Charles Turpin of the NMSU-A Financial Aid Office proudly hold the plaque awarded to NMSU-A for being selected for the Top 15% list of Military-Friendly schools in the nation.

Solar Energy Class This Fall
August 10, 2009
The NMSU-A Engineering Technology Program is excited to offer an introductory course this Fall 2009 semester, Solar Energy. With the national and regional emphasis being placed on renewable energy applications and technology, we hope this course is just the beginning of our presence in sustainable energy arenas. We also hope to partner with the Alamogordo High School as a means to encourage high school students to pursue careers in this rapidly expanding job market. These classes will also assist homeowners with their Renewable Energy plans.
This is a 3 credit hour, 16 week course, and does not have a pre-requisite. It is listed under the course number ET200 “Special Topics.” Individuals who are interested in registering for the courses must do so personally with an advisor at NMSU-Alamogordo. Unfortunately, web-registration is not available for this course. For more information, call Kathy Fuller at admissions (575)439-3700 or email kathfull@nmsu.edu.
Introduction to Solar Energy (ET 200 Special Topics A20) will be offered as a hybrid course (course content will be web-based and hands-on lab will be face-to-face) and will cover solar energy technologies, including topics in passive, solar thermal and photovoltaic systems. Theory, practical applications, safety considerations and the economics of solar energy systems will be explored and compared to conventional systems. The textbook will be “The Renewable Energy Handbook” by William H. Kemp. Instructor Dennis Mrkvicka brings a combination of 31 years of knowledge and experience to the classroom.
