Student Organizations Awards Banquet
The Student Organizations Awards Banquet was held Saturday, December 3, 2011 at the Tays Center and was open to all students. Over 200 signed up to attend.
Dr. Cheri Jimeno, NMSU-A President, welcomed the event participants. A strong supporter of student organizations and a firm believer in higher education, she enjoys working with students and being a part of the activities that the student organizations sponsor.
Daniel Taylor, NMSU-A Student Government President, thanked the student organizations for participating in the Welcome Back Day/“Block Party” and for their planning several events for Crimson Day which unfortunately was canceled due to bad weather. He then introduced the organization advisors, who presented certificates of appreciation to their organization’s active officers and members.
Organizations represented at the banquet included:
- Advocates for Children and Education – a service organization helping children in the community and supporting education. Activities this semester include fundraisers for scholarships and school supplies for disadvantaged children and the “Angel Tree” program. The group was also in charge of the food for this banquet. Advisors are Dr. Joyce Hill and Ms. Jenna Deinert.
- Campus Christian Fellowship – a service organization that holds prayer meetings and Bible studies. Activities this semester include partnering with the Chess Club to sponsor a blood drive and organizing the “See You at the Flag Pole” event. Advisors are Janet Delgado and Kay Flowers.
- Chess Club – a student organization that holds weekly chess instruction and games. Activities include partnering with CCF to sponsor a blood drive and sponsoring a chess demonstration by International Chess Champion, Matt Grinberg.
- NMSU-A Student Government – a very active organization co-sponsors the Town Hall Chats with PTK, provides funding for bike racks, tables, and benches, approves appropriation of funds by other organizations for their events, and coordinated the End of Semester Luau. The group also sponsored this awards ceremony. Advisors for NMSU-A Student Government are Kim Lopez-Gallagher and Judy Garcia.
- Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society – an academic honor group who started the Town Hall Chats, sponsors the Commitment Wall and the Toys for Tots effort. This group was also in charge of the tables and the decorations for tonight’s banquet. Advisors are Dr. Jim Gallagher and Mr. Matthew Placencio.
- Social Science Club – a service organization interested in environmental and social concerns. The group plans to be more active in the spring semester. Advisors for the club are Wanda Wakkinen and Mr. Bill Lockhart.
Student Nurses Association is a new organization that chartered this year. They will start sponsoring blood drives in the spring. They have held two nurses pinning ceremonies this year. Advisors for the Student Nurses Association are Karen Sadowski and Ms. Rhonda Alterson.
Student Veterans of America-Alamogordo is also a new organization that chartered this year to assist veterans and their dependants. Activity: Veteran’s Day BBQ fund raiser for the Wounded Warrior program. Advisors of SVAA are Dr. Karen Reid, Charles Turpin, and Gary Bond.
NMSU-A Nursing Graduates Represent the Future
Thursday evening, December 8th at the Tays Center, the Fall 2011 graduates of NMSU-A’s Nursing Program were celebrated with the traditional “Capping & Pinning” ceremony. A large audience of family, friends, and well wishers were present to pay honor to the 19 graduates, acknowledging their long hours of study, preparation, and success.
The feature of the celebration was each graduate receiving their pin (Nursing Pin photo) by special family members and receiving their cap (women) or band (men) from registered nurses. These 19 graduates are now ready to enter the nursing profession.
Keynote speaker was Kerry Bolin, RN-BC, MSN who spoke of the new frontiers of the profession, resulting from the amazing technological advances in medical science. The keynote speech was followed by the recognition of the August 2010 Dorothy Talbert Scholarship recipient, Jessica Neuhausel, who completed the NMSU-A nursing program under this scholarship and was presented a parting tribute of a stethoscope. Kirk Sadowski gave the history of the pin; Karen Sadowski provided a history of the nurse’s cap, and Tania Bohn, the history of the lighting of the lamps.
The celebration closed with the graduates reciting the “Nightingale Pledge” which is an adaptation of the Physician’s Hippocratic Oath. (Excerpt) “I solemnly pledge…I will be active in assisting others in safeguarding and promoting the health and happiness of mankind.” The pledge in its entirety exemplifies the dedication and honor of those reciting it to their chosen profession.
Campus Winter Break Hours
Through 16 December the campus will be open normal hours, except as noted below.
From Monday, December 19 through Thursday, December 22, the campus will be open from 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM. Starting on Friday, December 23 through Monday, January 2, the campus will be closed.
Library Holiday Hours:
- Monday – Friday: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
- Saturday – Sunday: Closed
Academic Support Center:
- The ASC will close December 9 at 4:00 PM and remain closed until Monday, January 23 at 9:00 AM.
The Bistro:
- The Bistro will be closed at 4:00 PM December 8 thru January 22. They will re-open January 23 at 8am.
Computer Lab:
- The Computer Lab will be closed until classes resume on January 19.
Testing Center
- Mondays: 9:00 to 2:00
- Tuesday: 2:00 to 7:00
- Wednesday: 2:00 to 7:00
- Thursday: 9:00 to 2:00
- Friday – Sunday: Closed
The week of 12/19, the Testing Center will be open from 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM on Tuesday and Wednesday, instead of 2:00 PM – 7:00 PM.
NMSU-A Named Most Military Friendly
NMSU Alamogordo has been named one of the most military friendly schools in the nation for the third consecutive year. The Military Friendly Schools list, which represents the top 20 percent of the nation’s schools that are doing the most to embrace military students, veterans and their families, is determined through exhaustive research by the G.I Jobs Military Friendly Schools team. This research includes government agencies, private entities that administer education benefits, and a comprehensive survey of more than 8,000 schools.
Military Friendly Schools go that “extra mile” for active duty, those transitioning to the public sector, and their families. NMSU Alamogordo proves this every day by providing benefits and services that testify to its Military Friendly status.
First, NMSU-A provides knowledgeable and highly qualified advisors, willing to spend the time necessary to help you find the best match for your needs and goals. They stay current with all VA benefits and funding by regularly attending extensive regional and state VA educational benefits and transitional training.
The initial intake session is 45 minutes to an hour. Advisors provide potential students with a wealth of resources and information, assist with paperwork, and “walk them through” the entire process. ( call 439-3632)
Second, NMSU-A provides many outreach programs in the community and beyond, including HAFB, WSMR, all NMSU system schools, and surrounding areas to keep them informed about the changes taking place with VA benefits.
Third, NMSU-A provides the Student Veterans of America-Alamogordo, a campus chartered student organization that enhances campus awareness of veteran concerns/activities with faculty, staff, and other student organizations and provides community outreach. On Veterans Day, the SVAA hosted a free barbecue “under the canopy” with all donations going to the “Wounded Warrior” project.
In the upcoming new year, the Veterans Advisor office will be relocated to the Student Union Building and the current conference room there will be remodeled into a Veterans lounge area.

NMSU-A Jazz Band Holiday Concert
The NMSU-A Jazz Band will present its Holiday Concert on Thursday, December 8, at 6:30 p.m. at the Rohovec Theatre on the University campus. The program will feature big band favorites as well as Holiday tunes and two vocalists. Admission is free! Call 439-3689 for more information.
NMSU-A Math Department Offers a New Course: COLL 111
COLL 111 is offered online for returning students, students who have not taken a math course in several semesters, or students who passed their last math course with a “C”. Coll 111 will provide a review of math skills needed in order for the student to be successful in their next math course. The course will include face to face study groups and individualized tutoring.
NMSU-A Singers Host a Holiday Concert
The NMSU-A Singers will be presenting a concert on Saturday, December 3 starting at 7:30 pm. The dIrector is Mrs. Carol Widener and accompanist is Karen Pilgren. The concert will be held at the Grace Baptist Church at 2324 Indian Wells Road. Donations of $4 per person or $10 per family will benefit the Lewis Jordan Scholarship fund. A wide variety of Holiday music will be performed during this event. We invite you to “sing” in the spirit of the season!
