NMSUA Students Dominate STEM Scholarship Awards

Four NMSUA STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) students were awarded scholarships to participate in the Summer Community College Opportunity for Research Experience (SCCORE), funded by the National Science Foundation.  The program is designed to help students further realize their potential and build academic and research skills. NMSUA was awarded more scholarships than any other participating college. Alamogordo students competed with community college students from Santa Fe, Dona Ana, Luna, Grants and Carlsbad.

Reece Broughton, Joshua Cope, Michael Finley and Margaret Turpin were awarded research apprenticeships and will participate on an NMSU faculty member’s research project this summer. Scholarship winners will also receive free room and board for a month, paid university registration and course enrollment fees, paid activity fees, and a student stipend of $1,500. Students will present their research at a program-end Symposium and at the New Mexico AMP Student Research Conference in Las Cruces on October 4. NMSU-A University Singers Spring Concert!

Friday, May 3, NMSU-A University Singers will present a Spring Concert, “A Folk Celebration,” featuring choral works of folk music from around the world.  The concert will be held at Bethel Baptist Church located at 1316 Scenic Drive at 7:00 p.m.  Tickets are $4.00 and are available at the door.  All proceeds from the concert are applied to the Lewis Jordan Music Scholarship for students attending NMSU-A.  For more information contact Diana Calkins, 439-3670.

Annual Spring Student Art Show – 2013

On Thursday, May 2nd from 4:00 – 7:00 pm, NMSU-A will host its Annual Student Art Show, featuring student work from ceramics, sculpture, painting, drawing, photography, digital video, digital graphics, and animation. A formal presentation of student artwork will be shown in the Art Exhibition Lab located in the Pro Tech building next to the main lobby where the main reception will be held.

Spring 2013 Outstanding Graduates

Michael Finley, Matthew Harris, and Jerry S. Kimmel were selected as the Outstanding Graduate from their respective instructional divisions.  They will be recognized and honored Wednesday, April 24th at noon in the End-of-Semester Awards and Recognition Ceremony to be held on the campus patio.

Michael is the Outstanding Graduate from the Mathematics, Engineering, Science, and Health Division (MESH).  He has held the designation of Crimson Scholar since fall semester of 2011 and has been named to the Dean’s Honors List.  He is also a member of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society and is a tutor in the Academic Support Center.  He will graduate with an Associates of Science in May and plans to continue his education at NMSU by earning a Bachelors in Fisheries, Wildlife, & Conservation Ecology.  His future plans include a career with the U.S. Forest Service.

Matthew is the Outstanding Graduate from the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Education Division (HSSE).  Winner of the Marvin D. Rohovec Scholarship, he is extremely active on campus as Journalism Club President, Student Government Vice President, Editor-in-Chief of the “Crimson Gazette” student newspaper, and active member of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society and the Student Media Solutions campus group.  He also tutors in the Academic Support Center. He will graduate with an Associates of Arts Degree this May.

Jerry, Outstanding Graduate from the Professional Occupations, Technologies, and Fine Arts Division, will earn his Associates in Applied Science in Biomedical Equipment Technology this May.  He is the BioMed work study in charge of intern enrollment and development, has played an instrumental role in re-energizing the Biomedical curriculum, and has assisted with the location and purchase of equipment for the Biomedical laboratory.  He has a continuing Academic Tuition Scholarship, is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society, and is a member of the Alpha Chi Society (must have a 3.8 or above GPA).  Jerry is the past 2nd Vice Commander, American Legion and currently is the senior biomedical intern at Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center.  He was recently hired (December) by Universal Hospital Services (UHS) as the hospital Quality Coordinator to repair all types of biomedical equipment.  Jerry will begin his Bachelors Degree in Applied Studies at NMSU this fall.

End-of Semester Student Awards & Recognition Ceremony

The End-of-Semester Awards and Recognition Ceremony will take place on Wednesday, April 24 at 12:00 noon on the CB Patio. The Outstanding Graduates for 2013 will be recognized at this event by the New Mexico State University Office of Alumni Relations. The names of the New Crimson Scholars will be read, and the Student Organization members will receive awards and certificates at this event. There will be free food from Quiznos and cake. Join us in honoring your fellow students for their outstanding efforts and accomplishments.

NMSU-A Welcomes Accessibility Services Coordinator

Viviane

NMSU-A welcomes Viviane Ackall as its Accessibility Services Coordinator. Her office is in the Student Services Building. Originally from Brazil where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Speech Pathology, she gained vast experience working with people with various disabilities in different settings – private offices, clinics, and specialized schools. After moving to Texas, she gained experience with college admissions and later in Colorado as a college Transfer Coordinator/Advisor/TRIO Coordinator/Scholarship Advisor.

Viviane holds a Master’s Degree in Business Communication from John’s International University. She is the mother of two, Yasmine, 6 years old and Gabriel, 9 years old. Her husband is a dentist at Ben Archer.

Celebrating Scholarship at NMSU-A

Students today are our future teachers, scientists, nurses, business people, etc. As they prepare for their future, they need the opportunity to celebrate their academic achievements of today. NMSU-A is providing such an opportunity on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, April 23rd – 25th from noon until 1:00 pm in the campus glass house. Students from all disciplines will have the opportunity to display their achievements, discuss their importance, and answer questions.

This is the first “Celebrating Scholarship” event at NMSU-A, but its organizers hope it will become a regular semester event. Students, campus personnel, and the community are encouraged to come out and support these people as they exhibit their academic excellence.
Light refreshments will be provided.

Take Back the Night Friday, April 19

The “Take Back the Night March and Rally” is scheduled on Friday, April 19 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm at the Tays Center. The purpose of the march and rally is to raise awareness and collectively focus upon the societal problem of domestic and sexual violence.

Along with community partners, there will be resources and live demos, Also, door prizes, water, Tae Kwando and Zumba demonstrations. Free t-shirts while supplies last.

2-mile March
Bicycles, children, dogs (on leash), signs, and banners are welcome on the 2-mile march! Several student organizations are supporting this event and will be marching in this event.

Earth Day is Monday, April 22!

Earth Day is Monday, April 22!  In recognition of this day on which events are held worldwide to demonstrate support for environmental protection, students from Dr. Gloria Villaverde’s Environmental Science classes are holding an event on the CB Patio from 11:30-1:00 pm.
