Dr. Ryan Carstens, Vice President for Academic Affairs, New Mexico State University Alamogordo has been selected by a national review panel as one of only 30 community college leaders to attend the prestigious Executive Leadership Institute sponsored by the League for Innovation in the Community College. The 30 participants hold senior-level leadership positions in community colleges throughout the United States.

Gerardo E. de los Santos, president and CEO of the League for Innovation, said, “The review panel was extremely impressed with the quality of the applicants, which speaks well for the future vitality of the community college.”

The institute, to be held in Phoenix, Arizona, December 7-12, 2014, provides an opportunity for potential community college presidents or those in transition to review their abilities and interests, to refine their skills, and to participate in discussions on leadership with an outstanding array of faculty drawn from among nationally and internationally recognized community college leaders. These include community college chief executive officers, experts in leadership development, community college trustees, presidential search consultants, members of the League for Innovation board of directors, and other prominent figures.

This is the Executive Leadership Institute’s twenty-sixth year preparing senior-level community college administrators to successfully fill the presidential role.

The League is an international association dedicated since 1968 to catalyzing the community college movement. The League hosts conferences and institutes, develops web resources, conducts research, produces publications, provides services, and leads projects and initiatives with member colleges, corporate partners, and other agencies in a continuing effort to make a positive difference for students and communities.

Your College Connection is Here

College Connection is an innovative program that will change the way students transition from high school to college. Starting in fall 2014 and in partnership with Alamogordo Public Schools the College Connection program will offer automatic admission to NMSU-A for all AHS seniors. In addition to automatic admission, all student services such as admission, completing the financial aid application, ecompass placement test, career assessment, and advising for degree are physically provided at the high school at no cost to APS, parents, or students.

No doubt, many have read or heard that navigating through the Admissions process and Financial Aid paperwork can be challenging. Seniors and parents will be glad to know this multifaceted service will be completed entirely at Alamogordo High School during the Advisory period. AHS and NMSU-A have partnered to assure that students fully participate in exploring their career goals, to guide students in their transition from high school to college, and to maximize the college student experience.

NMSU-A’s 2014 Staff Award Winners

Teresa Provencio was selected for this year’s non-exempt staff award. She has been with NMSU-A for 16 years, and is always helpful, friendly, courteous, and professional. She serves on committees and attends training sessions to make sure she’s informed on new developments. She arrives early and gets everything up and running so students can come in starting at 7:45 am. She is currently the only person who catalogs all library materials. She is truly committed to her duties and a great asset to NMSU-A.

Sara Cerra was selected for this year’s exempt staff award. When faced with a task list, she analyzes it but does not judge it. She makes an objective decision based upon the resources available and returns a product promptly, without strings attached. She works hard to keep a positive attitude and evaluates herself objectively. She knows her limits, but tries to beat them anyway.
