Faculty Retirements

December 12, 2008

At the end of Fall Semester 2008, we have two members of the faculty who will be retiring from NMSU-A, Mr. Clint Burleson and Ms. Loretta Diehl.

Mr. Burleson, Professor of Computer Science, has been with NMSU-A for 30 years.  He is the Area Coordinator for Computer Science and served as the Acting Division Head for Math, Science, Business, and Technology during academic year 2006-2007. Clint was one of the first NMSU-A faculty to begin teaching online classes, and he was very instrumental in getting other faculty involved in this process.

Ms. Diehl, Professor of Nursing, has been with NMSU-A for 19 years.  She served as coordinator of the ADN program from 1997-1999, and has taught in the program since 1989.  Her areas of expertise have included Pharmacology, Fundamentals of Nursing, Medical-Surgical Nursing, and Pathophysiology.  Loretta has been very active in campus-wide activities such as serving on the Campus Teaching and Development Committee, coordinating the Branch Campus Roundups, and providing expertise in assessment.

Clint and Loretta — best wishes to you both!

Smoke-Free Campus?

November 6, 2008

NMSU Alamogordo is considering options regarding moving toward a smoke-free (no smoking) campus. Possibilities include:

  1. Going completely smoke-free
  2. Designating a few “smoking areas” around campus
  3. Leaving things the way they are (no smoking in and within 25 feet of campus building entrances)

Campus administrators are currently seeking input concerning these possibilities. If you have an opinion, please make a comment below! Thanks.

Eulogy for Lowery Davis

October 24, 2008

Lowery H. Davis, former dean of the New Mexico State University College of Human and Community Services, now the College of Health and Social Services, passed away in Las Cruces October 4th at the age of 87. According to many NMSU Alamogordo Faculty & Staff, Lowery was a consistent and effective supporter of NMSU-A during his tenure. For a NMSU Communications Release on Dean Davis, please see: NMSU remembers first dean of College of Human and Community Services.

Dr. David Townsend presented a eulogy for Lowery Davis on October 9th. Here it is in full:

EULOGY for LOWERY DAVIS

Delivered by David Townsend
October 9, 2008

Several years ago, Lowery called me in Alamogordo and, serious, as only Lowery could be, asked if I would do a eulogy at his funeral. Equally seriously, I told him I had a very crowded calendar and what date did he have in mind? Lowery, very serious by this time, told me I would never amount to anything because I could not get serious. I agreed to do the eulogy because there is no graceful way to decline. Besides, I loved Lowery Davis and was honored by the request, hoping this day would never come, but it has.
