“Issues on Domestic Violence” to be Taught Summer Term
Posted June 3, 2009 by admin
The Summer Second Five Week Session (July 6th to August 7th) will see a new course taught: CJ 199, “Special Topics: Issues on Domestic Violence.” This is an online class.
Here is a description of the class:
Domestic violence — all the way from an angry touching to murder — is a growing crisis in American families, no longer hidden behind closed doors as a “private family matter.” Hundreds of these cases are investigated and prosecuted each year in Otero and Lincoln counties, thousands across New Mexico, and hundreds of thousands across the nation. Law enforcement officers risk their lives with every call to a “domestic,” as these cases are among the most dangerous for responders. How big is the problem? How do the local health care, social work and criminal justice communities respond? How should they? Is there an answer? These issues will be explored in a new on-line criminal justice/paralegal studies course (CJ 199/PL S 255: Special Topics: Issues in Domestic Violence) offered the second 5-weeks of the summer semester, from July 6 to Aug. 7. Instructor for this class is Mary Ellen Keith, J.D., who brings real world experience in the field, having served as the prosecutor for the Domestic Violence Unit of the 12th Judicial District (Otero and Lincoln counties.)

Three New-Style Communication Classes A’Coming!
Posted May 1, 2009 by admin
By Wanda Wakkinen, Communication Studies Faculty Member at NMSU Alamogordo.
During Spring 2009, I offered a new class called Cyberspace Communication. We met in the virtual world of Second Life and, I must say, it was a great success! One student, Sharon DiLeo, put it well, “It does appear clear that the power associated with a visual representation of another person fosters a very real feeling of closeness not necessarily felt in my online classes. It is as though, we are all neophytes growing up together in Second Life and are thus less strangers to one another.”
I will be offering Cyberspace Communication again this fall (Fall, 2009) and invite those of you whom we call early adapters to come find out what the excitement is all about. Learn about communication in and how to communicate effectively in virtual worlds, social networking sites, on field trips in Second Life, etc. The class, COMM 291-20, will meet once per week on Sunday evenings from 6-8 PM. Join me for a new, innovative classroom experience!
During Fall 2008, I taught a COMM 265 Principles of Human Communication pilot class as a hybrid class. We spent half of our time online and half of the time in the classroom, practicing communication skills learned as we progressed in the class. It also was very successful. Therefore, I will do it again, twice, this coming summer (Summer, 2009) during the second 5-week session. Join me in COMM 265-A60, Monday and Wednesday from 3-5 PM, OR COMM 265-A61, Tuesday and Thursday from 10:20-12:20. Enjoy the best of both worlds. Do half of the class work at home on your computer, and, even on class days, be home for lunch or dinner!

English 363 Offered Summer Term

English 363, Literature for Children and Young Adults, will be offered here at NMSU-A, Summer I. The class will meet from 5:30-9:15 on Monday and Wednesday nights. The course focuses on classic texts of children’s literature as well as the historical and political forces that work to shape literature written with children as the target audience. Students can expect lively discussions, films, papers and presentations, and a good amount of reading. English 363 is required for the Elementary Education degree, and that is why Professor Roark-Diehl has been offering it every summer since 2000. Stop by the HSSE building to get a flyer with details and the book list.
Proposed Technology Fee
Posted April 1, 2009 by admin
Dear NMSU-A Student:
Many colleges and universities imposed technology resource (TR) fees during the 1990s, investing the generated funds from the fee in campus technology. We are now in the 21st century, but NMSU-A still does not have a TR fee. However, you (our students) deserve access to 21st century technology while enrolled in classes at our campus.
We need your assistance. We are asking for your support to increase the student fee from $2 per credit to $4 per credit. The increase ($2) will be used exclusively for a TR fee and would help the campus keep the technology used by you (our students) up-to-date (see back for other community college and university fee rates). For example, this year we need to update the hardware and software in three of our computer labs. The implementation of a TR fee would provide sufficient revenue for the campus to update two of the three computer labs. Other uses of the TR fee might include maintaining and replacing PC viewers and digital cameras, implementing additional wireless access points, and providing part-time student assistants in the computer labs.
Since the TR fee is money that you would provide to the campus, NMSU-A would insure that you are represented in how the monies are spent. Most colleges and universities have implemented a TR Committee. All requests for technology funded by the TR fee must come through the committee and half of the members of the committee must be currently-enrolled students. Typically, the committee is composed of eight (8) individuals, four of whom are currently-enrolled students. The students are selected by the Student Senate; in our case, the students would be selected by Student Government. If NMSU-A were to implement a TR fee, we would follow this type of committee structure.
This letter asks for your feedback and support of this initiative. A ballot for this initiative will be posted on the campus website until April 17. Please vote “yes” or “no.” You can also return the mailed-out ballot via snail mail to the Office of the President, 2400 N. Scenic Drive, Alamogordo, NM 88310 or you can drop off your ballot in the Student Services building.
When you attend NMSU-A, you deserve access to up-to-date technology. The implementation of a TR fee will allow the campus to provide you (and future students) with this access. We look forward to your vote and feedback.
Sincerely,
Cheri Jimeno, Ph.D.
President
