“Issues on Domestic Violence” to be Taught FALL Term

In the Fall Second Eight Week Session (October 12-December 9), CJ 199, “Special Topics: Issues on Domestic Violence,” will be offered again as an online class.
Here is a description of the class:
Domestic violence — all the way from an angry touching to murder — is a growing crisis in American families, no longer hidden behind closed doors as a “private family matter.” Hundreds of these cases are investigated and prosecuted each year in Otero and Lincoln counties, thousands across New Mexico, and hundreds of thousands across the nation. Law enforcement officers risk their lives with every call to a “domestic,” as these cases are among the most dangerous for responders. How big is the problem? How do the local health care, social work and criminal justice communities respond? How should they? Is there an answer? These issues will be explored in this on-line criminal justice/paralegal studies course (CJ 199/PL S 255: Special Topics: Issues in Domestic Violence) offered the second 8-weeks of the fall semester, from October 12 to December 9. Instructor for this class is Mary Ellen Keith, J.D., who brings real world experience in the field, having served as the prosecutor for the Domestic Violence Unit of the 12th Judicial District (Otero and Lincoln counties.)
