Electrical Apprenticeship Classes
August 10, 2009
The ET (Engineering Technology) Program at NMSU-A has an educational partnership with the Southern New Mexico Chapter of the IEC (Independent Electrical Contractors, Inc) which allows the university to provide a registered Electrical Apprenticeship Program. This Fall2009 Semester will kick-off the first of eight Electrical Apprenticeship courses required for completion of the four year IEC registered Electrical Apprenticeship Program. The Program incorporates on-the-job training at local businesses along with related coursework and labs to produce qualified and knowledgeable electricians for both construction and maintenance work. At completion of the four year program, the Apprentice will receive an AAS degree and is eligible in becoming a Journeyman Electrician after having passed the required state of New Mexico exam.
Students interested in the Apprenticeship Program or anyone simply interested in learning more about electrical concepts may register for OEET 151 (Electrical Trades) by contacting the admissions office at (575) 439-3700; or current students may register online through www.my.nmsu.edu. Local businesses may find the courses useful as a refresher or follow-on training resource for current electricians.
OEET 151 is a 6 credit course including hands-on-labs, which will meet Fridays from 5:00 – 10:00 p.m. Apprentices will learn electrical theory, hand tools and OSHA national regulations, as well as first aid and CPR. The OEET 151 instructor, Dennis Mrkvicka, is a retired Electrical Power Engineer and is attending an IEC (Independent Electrical Contractors) sponsored teacher training this summer in preparation for the courses.
For more information about the program, refer to http://nmsua.edu/documents/degrees-certificates/apprenticeship_programs.pdf at the NMSU-A website.
