Student of the Month – May: Leslie Peterson

Leslie Peterson enrolled at NMSU-A in the fall of 2017 and has maintained an average GPA of 3.7. She was accepted into the School of Nursing program for fall 2019, and will earn her BSN. Even though she has been busy with school work she has participated in Student Government, is the president and a senator of the Social Science Club, she is also the represent Social Science Club at the Student Government meetings. She is the secretary of the Alpha Nu Beta Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and attended the New Mexico PTK regional conference.

When not at school, Leslie is busy with her 5 year-old-son and has assisted in coaching under 6 soccer teams for both fall 2018 and spring 2019 seasons. She has also assisted with activities at her son’s preschool, i.e. crossing guard, lunch time assistant, set up/tear down of events. She has a second son who is 10 yrs old and lives with his dad in Washington state.

Leslie is a proud Army Veteran who served as a combat medic for the US Army active service component for 12 years and 9 months, with 1 twelve month deployment to Baghdad, Iraq. She was honorably discharged in February 2016 at the rank of Sergeant.

Her motivation is to complete school and show both her children that no matter what age you are and no matter what life challenges you may have, completing a college degree is possible. Leslie hopes to be hired after graduation through the federal system at an active duty military medical treatment facility or at a Veteran Affairs medical treatment facility in the state of Washington where her oldest son resides.
