Types of aid
New FAFSA’s will be out for the 2018-2019 school year starting October 1st! Please follow these steps to ensure your file is completed in a timely manner:
If you are required to file 2016 taxes, please do so as early as possible using E-File (a paper tax return will delay the FAFSA process)
- Apply for Admissions in a degree-seeking program.
- Create a FSA ID. Be sure to use an email address that you will have access to after you leave college and that your name matches your social security card. NOTE: If you are under the age of 24, please have your parents create a FSA ID with their own email address.
- Log into FAFSA and select the aid year you are applying for (NOTE: An academic year starts on August 1 and ends on July 31)
- Try to link your taxes by using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool
- If unable to link, please order a copy of your IRS Tax Return from IRS.GOV
- Create a myNMSU account to review any requirements and to enroll for direct deposit.
- Wait 7 to 10 business days after submitting your FAFSA to review your requirements on your myNMSU account.
- Please submit all requirements to the Financial Aid Office if you are selected for verification.
- Accept the Terms and Conditions on myNMSU
- Log into FAFSA and select the aid year you are applying for. NOTE: an academic year starts on August 1 and ends on July 31.
- If necessary, recover your FSA ID.
- Try to link your taxes by using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool
- If unable to link, please order a copy of your IRS Tax Return from IRS.GOV
- Wait 7 to 10 business days after submitting FAFSA to review your requirements on your myNMSU account.
- Please submit all requirements to the Financial aid office for processing if you are selected for verification.
- Accept the Terms and Conditions on your mynmsu account.

Basic Eligibility Requirements
The Financial Aid Office provides information for Work-Study positions on and off campus.
Work-Study Eligibility
- Complete a FAFSA and demonstrate financial need
- Have completed the admissions process
- Enrolled as a degree-seeking student
- Enrolled in 6 credit hours as an undergraduate student
- Maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)

Retrieving your Award Letter
- Log in to your myNMSU account
- Under Quick Links, select Financial Aid
- Click Award
- Select Aid Year
- In Award Overview, print the section under Financial Aid Award by Term
- Have supervisor sign award letter and return to NMSU Alamogordo HR Office
